After a long delay and a few false starts by ESB along the way, we’re delighted to confirm that they have finally delivered 3 phase power to Gortnaglough Community Park this week (only about 6 months late!).
As everyone knows, the delay meant we had to run our new LED floodlights using a diesel generator, which brought significant unplanned cost and effort over the past number of months.
The good news is that within 24 hours of the connection going live, our floodlight partners moved quickly to get us switched over to mains power - meaning the generator can now be removed.
For our coaches, it also means:

For our coaches, it also means:
- No more running back and forth across the car park to switch lights on
- No more diesel runs to keep the generator going
- Floodlights are now controlled remotely
This marks one of the final milestones in our #LetsGoAstro project and is a big step forward for the club.
A huge thank you to Jim Finn and Pat Forde for their patience and persistence throughout the delays, and to everyone who helped escalate matters along the way including John Crowley, Denis Aherne, Frank O’Brien and many many others. Thanks also to the McSherry engineers, who braved tough conditions this week and reshuffled their schedule (we gazumped the RDS) to get us connected.
For context, the LED lighting system at Gortnaglough is the same standard as used in venues such as Croke Park, the Aviva Stadium and the RDS - something we’re very proud of as a community club.
We’re extremely fortunate to now have such a state-of-the-art facility, both in terms of lighting and playing surface.
