Ballinhassig AFC has completed its new full-size Astro development at Gortnaglough Community Park. The project represents one of the largest developments ever undertaken by the club and was made possible through a combination of club fundraising, donations, sponsorship, grant aid and long-term project financing. We are delighted to confirm that the Astro Project was delivered on time and within budget. This executive summary highlights the key financial aspects of the project.
Project Summary
€706,414 Total Astro Project Cost
€173,309 Club fundraising / debt reduction before & during the project
€428,774 Donations, Sponsorship & Grant Aid (Sports Capital Grant, Cork County Council & Munster Senior League)
€174,844 Clann Credo financing allocated to Astro Project
Club Fundraising and Community Support
The club's fundraising work began before the Astro Project formally commenced, with initial fundraising and debt-reduction initiatives enabling approximately €79,000 of existing club debt to be cleared. A further €94,309 was then raised directly by the club through major and smaller fundraising initiatives towards the Astro development. Together, these efforts represented €173,309 raised or generated by the club in putting itself in a position to undertake and complete the project.
This was separate from the very significant additional support received through donations, sponsorship and grant aid. The club is extremely grateful to everyone who supported the project, particularly our donors also our sponsors, club members and the wider local community. Without this combined support, the development would not have been possible.
Grants and Project Financing
Grant support was received through the Sports Capital Program, Cork County Council and the Munster Senior League. Together with donations and sponsorship, these sources provided €428,774 towards the development. The project was also supported by long-term financing through Clann Credo. A €220,000 term loan was arranged, of which €174,844 was allocated to the Astro Project.
Project Cost and Contractor
The final calculated cost of the Astro Project was €706,414. HSD (Hourihan) were selected as main contractor following a rigorous tender process involving Club Committee members and independent members of the local community.
The original HSD quotation was €639,209.87 including VAT, with agreed net scope changes of €1,524.31. The balance of the overall project cost related to other directly associated works and fees, including surveys, tree cutting, goalposts, ESB three-phase connection, electrical works, bank/legal fees and other project costs.
Financial Governance
Project funds were managed through a dedicated AIB Deposit Account ring-fenced for club infrastructure development and separate from day-to-day club accounts. This had a zero balance at the commencement of the project. Funds raised or received specifically for the Astro development were lodged to this account and project expenditure was managed through it.
As an additional control, the account does not have online banking access. Transactions require both of the club's Vice Treasurers to attend the bank personally. Project team members and other Club Committee members do not have access to the account, in accordance with club policy. The project accounts have also been independently reviewed by an accountant.
Overall Club Financing Position
The club's total debt was €133,976 in July 2022. At July 2026, following completion of the Astro development and refinancing of the club's borrowings, total club debt stood at €216,164. This represents an increase in overall indebtedness of €82,188 while delivering a facility with a total project cost of €706,414.
