"If you’ve still got some game in you, Walking Football will set you free, it's the perfect fit for anyone who wants to play football for longer, make new friends, meet old friends and stay active. It's great fun, safe and more important for us oldies it offers a way to socialise and get out of the house on those long dark winter nights" so say Denis Ahern organiser and a huge advocate for Walking Football in our community.
Denis is closely watching the aspirations for an all-weather floodlit pitch in Gortnaglough. "Our indoor parish hall just isn't suitable and whilst some of us occasionally travel into the city to play, without a base in our own community we are never going to realise the potential of this activity"
"There's a huge cohort of men and women in their 50's 60's and 70's who have best intentions to stay healthy and fit but they just slip into a routine - be that the armchair or highchair. Being a rural community I have seen how this leads to social isolation in some cases"
Denis has already a hardy bunch involved (mostly ex players from Ballinhassig AFC 1970's and 80's) "the likes of Donie, Denis, Ger, Eddie, Joe - if the Astro gets delivered we're already looking to form a team (women and men) for winter 2024 season"
